Industry vs profession? Defining the translation industry today and tomorrow

Join Callum Walker and Joseph Lambert for a thought-provoking lecture drawn from their chapter in the new Routledge Handbook of the Translation Industry.

Focusing on the provocative ‘industry’ vs ‘profession’ divide, they’ll make the case for rehabilitating the term ‘industry’.

Then, they’ll examine issues facing professionals today, from working conditions to a changing market and disruptive tech like GenAI and PEMT.

After the talk, the speakers will lead group discussions on how you feel about your work and what matters to you.

Note: The lecture will also be livestreamed. Discussions will be in-person only.

Thurs, 22 Jan 2026, 5.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.

London Metropolitan University, Room TM1-06, Holloway Road Campus*, 66-220 Holloway Road, London N7 8DB

*Use the Rocket Entrance to the campus (the main entrance is being refurbished).

Transcreating with Confidence: Strategic Thinking for Creative Work

Transcreation can be daunting, unless you have a tried-and-tested strategy. And that’s what you’ll take away from this workshop led by expert transcreator Claudia Benetello.

You’ll learn a structured 9-step workflow that formalises best practices and makes transcreation systematic by:

– exploring viable creative routes
– weighing trade-offs
– making deliberate choices you can defend to clients

You’ll see this approach in action during the hands-on practice with source texts in English, French, Spanish, German or Italian. And you’ll come away with an approach grounded in strategic thinking and decision-making, not just inspiration.

Tues 12 May 2026, 5.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.

University College London, Gower Street*, WC1E 6BT, Room: TBC

*Meet by Malet Place gate to UCL (opposite Waterstones) at 4.45 p.m. where UCL staff member Daniela Ford will take us onto campus.
